Small Business Saturday Attracts More Than 95 Million U.S. Consumers

buylocalAccording to Business Wire (12/1), a press release was released on Monday by NFIB and American Express. According to the survey, over 95 million consumers shopped in support of Small Business Saturday, marking an eight percent increase from 2014. Further, consumers “helped rally support for Small Business Saturday and their favorite small businesses on social media channels” with a reported 85 million social media engagements promoting Small Business Saturday throughout the month of November.

According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal (11/30), American consumers “spent $16.2 billion at independent retailers and restaurants on the day, a 14 percent increase from $14.3 billion in 2014.”

The International Business Times (11/28) reported that a survey conducted by American Express and NFIB found 55 percent of Americans are now aware of the holiday, with 83 percent of those saying it “inspires them to shop all year long” at small businesses.

On Fox News’ America’s News HQ (11/28, 1:23 p.m. ET), National Retail Federation CEO Matthew Shay discussed the holiday shopping season, particularly Small Business Saturday. Shay, noting the event has been recognized by Congress, said the day “represents main street retailing which is really what you think about as quintessentially American.” He said 75 percent of people have indicated they will “specifically shop for small business today, so we’re looking for a big day.” Shay also predicted healthy numbers for Cyber Monday and the remaining weekends ahead of Christmas.
